Codes become trees

With BARCODE PLANTAGE, a barcode becomes a tree in the garden of globalization

It can be found on almost all products: the barcode.
Everyone knows that it is used to make it easier to collect and register goods in shops. But what information is actually encoded in it?

If you enter the 8, 12 or 13 digits of a barcode into a product database query on the Internet, you can find out the manufacturer and country of origin. Furthermore, each barcode is assigned to only one product worldwide; however, this individuality is hardly noticeable.

BARCODE PLANTAGE brings together the graphic barcode including the digits and its information stored in the database to penetrate the meta-level of its uniqueness, so that it can unfold perfectly in front of the viewer through a graphic and acoustic interpretation.

How it works

If a barcode is entered into the BARCODE PLANTAGE, the program sends a query to the preset database and receives the master data of the product in response. These are then subjected to text analysis to determine the positions, curvatures and colours of Bezier curves, which then develop on the screen before the eyes of the viewer. Analogous to the length of the numerical code, the number of Bezier curves drawn varies. At the same time, a sequence of tones based on the sequence of numbers of the barcode is sounded.

To complete the picture, the database information with the corresponding number blocks for country of origin, manufacturer, product number and checksum are connected by thin lines.

Since all data is interpreted by an algorithm that works completely randomly, a characteristic tree grows for each product.
